May is Mental Health Awareness Month

By NDASA

Since 1949, the United States has observed May as Mental Health Awareness Month. The workplace is a key venue for promoting mental wellness and awareness about when and how to help someone who is experiencing emotional distress.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we have compiled this short list of helpful resources to assist employers who want to have a healthier, more productive workplace that is also more likely to attract and retain top talent.

1. 10 Common Warning Signs of a Mental Health Condition

The National Alliance on Mental Illness’s website is trove of resources about mental health and ways to connect people the help they need.

2. Expanding Implementation of Mental Health Awareness Training in the Workplace

This 2022 advisory from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is packed with great information, guidance and details about mental health awareness training available for various workplace settings, including offices, manufacturing and distribution warehouses, construction sites, retail stores, schools, healthcare settings and environments commonly encountered by first responders and active-duty military service members. SAMHSA reports several benefits for organizations that implement this training. Among them:

● reduction of healthcare costs for the businesses and employees;

● reduction in employee turnover, disengagement and days off work;

● reduction in problems affecting critical business processes and work culture by Identifying and address employee issues before they become critical;

● recognition of the signs and symptoms of individuals who need mental health support, and the delivery of safe and appropriate responses — including de-escalation during crisis situations.
